Dr Thorndyke is left to piece together the clues in this enticing mystery.

I agree that the Thorndyke books are a great series, but this is not one of the better entries in the series. Here Freeman tries his hand at romantic suspense — and the results are not enjoyable. The book contains an amusing scene at the end where Thorndyde makes a fool out of the coroner while the coroner is questioning him. But, that one scene does not justify trudging through this otherwise awful book.
