Ananna of the Tanarau abandons ship when her parents try to marry her off to an allying pirate clan: she wants to captain her own boat, not serve as second-in-command to her handsome yet clueless fiance. But her escape has dire consequences when she learns the scorned clan has sent an assassin after her.

And when the assassin, Naji, finally catches up with her, things get even worse. Ananna inadvertently triggers a nasty curse — with a life-altering result. Now… (plus)

Clarke took a big risk with The Assassin’s Curse in the way she wrote Ananna’s voice and thus the narration. It’s very distinct and with what you might call an accent if you’d only heard it. I’m not sure whether it’s a reflection of pirate patois or meant to convey that Ananna isn’t that well-educated, though since she can read, write, and cipher, I’d have to guess it’s the former.

It is a book not without technical accomplishments, and a pirate/assassin pairing has at least the benefit of somewhat more novelty than werewolf/vampire. But the strongest emotion I can muster in its regard is a sort of lukewarm goodwill.
