A Possible Life

The story takes too long to develop sufficient surprise or conflict — all that free-love equanimity is bad for fiction — but its final pages offer a profound reflection on the mysterious parts we play in one another’s lives.

Faulks’ novel --- or collection of novellas ---- succeeds because it does not overtly go out of its way to tie the five tales together. Themes recur in the stories, but the quest for inner peace and fulfillment of the soul remain constant throughout.

Delicately crafted stories.
